Generally working dogs are purchased as puppies. Before buying a puppy to either train or have trained, it is imperative to select one from proven lines within your breed of choice and preferably from two known reliable working parents.
At that point it is crucial that your puppy comes home to a safe, friendly environment where there is plenty of love, proper nutrition, and exercise. There are numerous activities you can do with your puppy to form a bond between the two of you early on. This will both provide him (or her) with plenty of exercise and will hone some of the natural skills and instincts that will help ensure a viable working dog later on. In the video below, I demonstrate this with my German Shepherd Dog Sheba at the age of nine weeks. The latter segments were filmed at eight months during her introduction to livestock and then at seventeen months during her everyday chores at feeding time.
