Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen, Inc. is a service organization intent on protecting the heritage of equestrian trails in Missouri while educating users of public and private land. Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen was formally initiated by trailriders in November, 2002. Our parent organization, Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA), just celebrated 30 years of successful intervention through volunteer efforts in the western states. Additional information on BCHA is available through their web site (www.backcountry horse.com) or calling 1-888-893-5161. Membership in Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen includes BCHA membership and receipt of their newsletter.
In today's climate of regulation and control, unrestricted horse and mule riding is a thing of the past. Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen, Inc. supports minimal regulation as needed to protect our natural resources. We seek to work with public land managers and other land users to minimize our impact, to become a positive force in our public land management, to be actively involved in trail maintenance and planning.
As an example, Show-Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen, Inc. is an advocate of cross tying your mount in the woods. Trees are a valuable resource that deserves our protection. Do not tie your horse or mule directly to a tree. Cross tying between two trees prevents horses and mules from chewing and damaging such vegetation. Carrying an extra lead rope or string rope is an easy method that is very important in conservation.
Horses and mules have provided a rich heritage in Missouri's historical and cultural past. Trailriding today continues that rich heritage and links us with our history and cultural roots. We intend to safeguard opportunities for equestrian access on Missouri's public areas including wilderness.
